BONUS: Season 4 Update

May 3, 2017

Season 4 launch is just around the corner, but before we get to that we want to let you know about some new exciting changes to the podcast!  We're soliciting your improv scenes!  Send us a two-minute clip of your improvising with a duo partner, and we may feature it on the podcast along with some helpful notes!  Basically its like taking an improv diagnostic class with us, but over the internet.  Send it to @thebacklinepod on Facebook or Twitter. LEGAL STUFF:  This is a free service. We have no interest in stealing your improv scenes and making sketches out of them. So you can't sue us.  This is for educational purposes only.

102 - Connections

May 10, 2017

It's the launch of Season 4.  In this episode Rob and Adam discuss how to take random scenes and find connections between them. Also covered, the difference between callbacks and connections, different methods of finding similiarities between scenes, and the dreaded FORCED connection.  Also Star Wars, surfing, and headphones.

103 - Silence

May 17, 2017

Silence is golden.  This week Rob and Adam talk very loudly about silent scenes. Together they explore: how to find silences in scenes, the 30 second rule, and how to improvise in a non-verbal way.  Also covered: Australia, Post-ITS, and Adam's new favourite artist.

104 - Death of Longform

May 24, 2017

Since Season 3 there's been some BIG changes in Toronto's improv community.  The Second City's Longform Conservatory is no more.  This episode we chat about why companies collapse, how to connect with the public, and how to sustain your longform troupe or company. Also Rob has a bunch of pockets full of teas bags.

105 - Jokes

May 31, 2017

In the context of improvisation, jokes can mean many things: a punchline, an out-of-place remark, a desperate attempt to get the audience to like you, or a straight up street joke (think Knock, Knock).  This week Rob and Adam deconstruct what it means to tell a joke and some of the biases improvisers have towards joke-telling.  Also we open up the Backline mailbag!
